Year 6 - Poplar Class and Willow Class

During the Srping Term, the Year 6 theme is Britain at War

As historians we will identify and learn why WW2 started.  We will the make links between main events, situations and changes within and across countries.  We will understand that different versions of the past may exist, giving some reasons for this.

As geographers we will locate the countries involved in WW2 and discuss the impact of war on their landscape and economy.

As writers we will write a biography on Winston Churchill, write discursive pieces, write fictional suspense stories and study and write our own war poetry.

As scientists we will learn about how light travels and make periscopes to look over the top of trenches.  We will also investigate the best materials for black out blinds, including how shadows are cast.

As designers we will look at the Japanese use of origami and make tanks of the allies and axis.

As artists we will study and produce our own WW2 line drawings of war planes and tanks

As chefs we will cook main savoury dishes and desserts from the 1940s.

As musicians we will learn about traditional songs sung by soldiers in WW2 and perform these to the rhythm of an army marching.

As sports people we are learning the skills and techniques of wall climbing.  We will also learn how to pass, shoot and defend and learn the positions and placement on the court during game situations.

Beyond the classroom we will perform a 1940s showcase (evening event)


In English we will be learning how to:

  • Employ different techniques to build suspense and discuss the impact these have on the audience.
  • Use langauge concisely and precisely to engage and inform the reader
  • Build on fluency and intonation in our reading
  • Use techniques to create suspense
  • Use emotive langauge to write war poetry
  • Use langauge and intonation (emphasis on particular words and phrases to write discursive texts
  • Spellings- suffixes ce/se, cious/tios, sion/tion/cian, cial/tial, ant/ance/ancy, ent/ence/ency
  • Gramar- present and past perfect tense, present and past progressive tense, phrases and clauses


In maths we will be learning to:

  • Make links between fractions, decimals and percentages
  • Calculate percentage of numbers, including deciamls and shapes
  • Use algebra to solve calulations, equations and sequences
